Myra Canyon: Kelowna

So... I'm not going to lie, I was a little surprised at how much snow was still up there and how cold it was!

Going from about 14C to 0C was not what I was expecting but that's what happens when you go up in elevation.

Spikes weren't needed but I would still bring them.

The air still has the crispness of winter and the breeze doesn't help.

There's a trail till 6km and then after that, you'll have to break it yourself. I would recommend gaiters if you're going further.

Most of the FSR is free of snow but there are a few icy patches.

I'm outdoorsy, but....

As somebody who thoroughly loves the outdoors, I've always found there's been a stigma on the type of person you must be.

I've gotten a lot of looks or remarks because I'll wear makeup on a hike, do my 'hair' (a ponytail that's not a messy chaos), wash my face on a backpacking trip, bring clean clothes to change into after, etc.

As if those will somehow make me less 'outdoorsy' and less competent in my ability to do it.

I like being clean and enjoying a few of the 'girly' things in life while still enjoying the outdoors. And to all the girlie's like me, keep doing your thing!

Dear 2024,

We had some moments!

It was my first year getting into backpacking, and I might have gone a bit overboard with it.

We also did over 100 hikes, made numerous new friends, started hosting more and more hikes, completed 100km of hiking in a week, and took off more time off than we had.

It was also a year where I started to feel like my old self, where I allowed myself to try and worry less and listen more to my body and what it needed. I also tried to be less harsh on myself for having little drive/goals this year. My main goal was to just get myself back.

I also realized that sometimes patience is key and things will happen to you when they're meant to happen to you. Forcing things into your life won't always work.

I also really want to remind people that social media is fake, and just like this highlight reel, we only highlight the parts of us we want the world to see. A lot of you didn't see my struggle from Jan-Mar and again in November and December. But coming off that note, I feel mentally better going into 2025.

So here's to 2025. May we give ourselves some grace when we need it, knock those goals/dreams out the window while just enjoying ourselves.

This trend. It brings me back to when you got one chance to capture it, and that was it.

Everyone had the same reaction when I gave them the camera: 'wow, I haven't seen one of these in years!' And the same reaction after taking the picture: the look of 'well I hope I got it'. 😆

Even though they're a little grainy/blurry, the colour is a little off, I love every single one of them. And only a few didn't turn out!

It was built in 1864, and it is one of the oldest remaining wooden lighthouses in the Maritimes.

Views at the hut are spectacular, but climb the 'little' hill behind to get the 360° views.

Mount Carlyle Lodge

This backcountry hut is located near New Denver in the Kootenays. It's just past the small ghost town of Sandon, 6-7 km on a FSR.

There's a set price for 10 people and then it's extra per person after. About 15 people can sleep comfortably.

They have 4 rooms with bunkbeds. When I say bunkbeds, they are solid bunkbeds and are the size of a king bed. Each bunk has 2 single mattresses. 3 of the rooms sleep 4 and one sleeps 3.

There's a bathroom inside and 2 outhouse outside. They have a sauna and a bucket shower (can only use it when the sauna is running as that's how the water is heated).

It has a fully stocked kitchen (fridge/freezer, oven/stove) with all the dishes you could need.

There's electricity (lights) and there's a power bar to charge your phone. Do be mindful when using electricity as it is solar.

And there's running water (with a water heater for warm water)!

That trip said it would 'rain' aka sprinkle for maybe 2 hrs and a chance of snow at night. We had about an hour of fall before winter took over.

Fall hiking in the Alpine is always a gamble. You're either going to ge sunshine, rain or snow, or all 3 at once. Here are some items you should always pack:

1. Waterproof items
-shoes/books
-gloves
-jacket
-pants
-gaiters

2. Layers (that can be layered)
-puffy jacket
-base layer (top/bottom)
-fleece layer (top for sure, bottom optional)
-if you run cold, maybe another layer

3. Hand warmers (min 4-2 for hands, 2 for feet)
4. Neck gaiter
5. Toque/headband
6. Wool socks (2 pairs)
7. Sleeping bag that has a minus rating
-optional is a liner that can provide extra warmth if your sleeping bag isn't warm enough.

9 days and 7 hikes to get in those larches.

I hiked over 100km and did almost 6200m in elevation gain.

I got some days of sun where the larches looked like they were glowing, and then I got days of snow and moody vibes.

I got to check off a bucketlist backpacking trip, did my first backcountry hut stay (now I'm addicted), experienced the Larch madness at Lake Louise (even though it snowed) and enjoyed the most delicious coffee at a teahouse.

9 days and 7 hikes to get in those larches.

I hiked over 100km and did almost 6200m in elevation gain.

I got some days of sun where the larches looked like they were glowing, and then I got days of snow and moody vibes.

I got to check off a bucketlist backpacking trip, did my first backcountry hut stay (now I'm addicted), experienced the Larch madness at Lake Louise (even though it snowed) and enjoyed the most delicious coffee at a teahouse.

I think I might have to make this an every year kind of a thing!

Unless you have a specific weekend(s) and you're right on Parks Canada website when the reservations open...chances of getting a spot here are pretty slim.

Having a few open weekends or weekdays and constantly checking for cancelations are a few ways to get a site.

Never heard of the Monashee Mountains? With all the other mountain ranges, this one can be overlooked. It's a little section that is tucked away between the Okanagan, the Kootenay's, and extends into Washington.

If you're in the Okanagan area (Cherryville), there's a lot of trails right next to each other, all with backpacking options. 3 of them are even on the same FSR!

1. Monashee Lake*
13.5km, there and back, 1043m elevation, hard

2. Pinnacle Lake*
6.9km, there and back, 515m elevation, hard

3. Vista Pass*
7.9km, there and back, 656m elevation, hard

4. Twin Lakes
7.2km, there and back, 484m elevation, hard

5. Spectrum Lake
11.6km, there and back, 454m elevation, moderate

*On the same FSR (forest service road). Some require a high-clearance vehicle, or you can walk the extra few km.

The hike that never disappoints!

Eva and Miller Lake (going up to Jade Pass) in Mount Revelstoke National Park is always a stunning hike, even on those cloudy days.

It's about a 16-17km return trip for Eva/Miller and 20-22km return to Jade Pass.

A park pass is required, and depending on when you go, get there before 10 am to make sure you'll get a spot.

It's definitely a hike to add to your future bucket list.

Did anyone else's summer just go from June to September in about 10 minutes?!

And what a summer. From late snow melt to a week that felt like summer to a heatwave that lasted to fires that came out of nowhere to some snow, it was wild one.

Because of this, it made me change (basically all of them) my plans on a continuous basis, but I think some of the backup plans turned out better than the original.

When you get tired of instant coffee on your hikes and just want a proper cup and you stumble upon this on Amazon. Like who doesn't love Amazon somedays?!

Everyone recommended the Aeropress, but that was kinda bulky, and I'm not a super fan of one-time use items if I don't need to use them.

So, I decided to spend $12 and get this filter. It's from Buphallo, a Canadian company (bonus, but I didn't know that when purchasing it), and I'm happy with it.

The only downfall is that you do need a ziplock bag to put it into after to avoid a mess. And since I like to have a bazillion cups of coffee a day, I just put new grinds over the old grinds in the filter and add water. Once I'm done, it goes into my ziplock bag where I'll clean it at home.

If you're driving the #1 HWY between Banff and Lake Louise, you'll definitely see Caslte Mountain.

I always wondered what it looked like from the top and finally had a chance this summer to find out.

But be warned, it's a 30km round-trip if you make it up the the cairn, 1500m elevation gain, and a good 9 hrs or more of hiking!

📍Twin Lakes, Monashee Mountains

This hike is absolutely stunning regardless of when you go. And it's not 'that' hard.

The hardest part is right at the start where you do a steady climb until you get to your first meadow. You'll pass 3 meadows before climbing down to the lakes. And it's under a 10km round trip!

Park Butte Lookout: Know Before You Go👇

This hike is located in Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington.

A hiking pass is required. You can either use the National Forest Pass or the National Parks Pass. If you're only going for a day, it is $5 and you can either buy the ePass online and print it off or at the parking lot, you can fill out the form and put the money in the vault next to it.

It is a 12.2km return hike with an elevation gain of 647m.

This hike is a popular day hike with lots of people going in and out. If you want to spend the night, it's a first-come, first-serve basis.

This was my first solo hiking trip of the summer. When I look back at last year's summer, I did so many solo trips to escape. I wasn't having the best mental health year, and everything felt overwhelming. The easiest way for me to cope was to run off into nature by myself.

I ventured far and wide to explore areas of BC, Alberta, and Washington.

1 & 2: Sept long weekend, I ventured across the border to Washington. The last day of Aug had me watching sunset from this lookout.

3 & 4: E.C Manning Provincial Park caught me in my first ever downpour, and my tent held up! And that carrying 40lbs on a 25km hike is not as fun as it sounds.

5 & 6: Banff! This was not the original plan for Aug long...Jasper was but nonetheless, it was still an epic backup plan. We magically got camping spots 3 days before the weekend, and not a moment was wasted.

7 & 8: Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park is something out of a Natiknal Geographic magazine. If this park is not on your bucket list, it should be. Seeing a glacier up close, stunning views all around and lakes to swim in is the perfect backpacking weekend.

9: E.C. Manning Provincial Park...twice in one month? We'll this was a backup plan that ended up being a backup plan. Everywhere was pouring that weekend, and this seemed to be the least amount, and it was supposed to stop mid day on Saturday. Instead, we showed up to rain, some snow, and it being 1C and decided back8in it would not be fun. Switched plans to frontcountry camp and to do a day hike.

10: Last but not least, I had to say goodbye to this gem @jennaelizabeth7777. She's off to Portugal to start her next adventure, and I couldn't be more proud of her! We've had some epic adventures, and you will be missed (by me forsure!). The best of best luck!!

Things I learned my first season Backpacking: Part 2

If you missed Part 1, look for it in the reels section.

1. Water filtration-one that can filter a lot of water in a short amount of time.

2. Wet wipes-you will use these for about everything. To 'showering', to washing your face/hands, to wiping off dishes, etc. Get the unscented ones.

3. You don't need the expensive backpacking meals. Look at how many days you'll be gone, how many km you'll be hiking, and how many calories you'll be burning. If you just need it for one meal on an overnighter, instant noodles will probably be fine.

4. Research the amenities at your campground. No need to bring anything extra if you don't need to, but knowing what to bring can keep you safer.

5. It's better to have more food than you need, then to run out... especially when you're not going straight back to a fully stocked house.

6. Anything that can be dirty, put it in its own ziplock to prevent any mess from happening.

7. Mosquito coils can help. I always bring a small one just in case.

3. You don't need the expensive backpacking meals. Look at how many days you'll be gone, how many km you'll be hiking, and how many calories you'll be burning. If you just need it for one meal on an overnighter, instant noodles will probably be fine.

4. Research the amenities at your campground. No need to bring anything extra if you don't need to, but knowing what to bring can keep you safer.

5. It's better to have more food than you need, then to run out... especially when you're not going straight back to a fully stocked house.

6. Anything that can be dirty, put it in its own ziplock to prevent any mess from happening.

7. Mosquito coils can help. I always bring a small one just in case.
